Brighter Futures Scholarships
Since 1952, the Virginia Foundation for Independent
Colleges (VFIC) has secured scholarship gifts to help ensure that access
to private higher education in Virginia is an affordable option for
students from all backgrounds and levels of financial need. The Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges is helping to meet our colleges’ critical financial aid needs by offering named scholarship opportunities to our contributors. The Brighter Futures Scholarship Program allows a corporation, foundation or individual to have one or more students at each of the VFIC's 15 member institutions selected as recipients of their scholarship. In addition to making an independent higher education possible for students who otherwise would not be able to attend, the program allows organizations to develop meaningful long-term relationships with students and "see" the positive effects of their philanthropic dollars. In FY2007, the VFIC awarded over $1.2 million in designated scholarship funds to our member colleges. These funds are providing approx. 730 students with opportunities to further their undergraduate education at our colleges and universities. Link to Brighter Futures Scholarship contributors' page
Virginia Scholars Fund Each year, there are many Virginia high school graduates who wish to attend one of the state’s leading private colleges or universities but lack the financial resources. In the fall of 2003, the VFIC launched the Virginia Scholars Fund to give these deserving students the financial assistance needed to attend a VFIC institution where academic programs are strong, the educational process is personal, and career opportunities abound. The VFIC has pooled the more than $266,000 of contributions made to this Fund and dispersed it to the 15 member colleges since June 2004.
Regional Scholarships
Through the VFIC Regional Scholarship Program,
donors designate gifts to go to deserving students from a specific area of
the Commonwealth. Support of our Regional Scholarship program goes
directly to benefit deserving students, enabling them to complete their
courses of study at the fine colleges and universities which are part of
the VFIC.
Undergraduate Research Scholarships (summer) Today our 15 colleges are actively working to increase the number of students entering careers in the sciences, math and engineering. In support of this effort, the VFIC has begun an initiative to expand the number of students engaged in undergraduate research in the sciences on our 15 campuses.
This initiative involves supporting students in 10-week summer research projects on their campuses, and working one-on-one with science faculty on intensive projects which often lead to publications and presentations at professional conferences. In pursuing such experiences, students gain new insight and enthusiasm about the sciences, and learn laboratory and research skills which give them an advantage on admission to graduate school and science-related careers.
