Distinguished professionals serving as judges and moderators, faculty members, and students from across Virginia support the VFIC’s annual Ethics Bowl testifying to the priority that each of these individuals places on personal ethics in the workplace, classroom, and all aspects of their lives.

The Ethics Bowl program was conceptualized in 1997 by the VFIC Ethics Task Force, co-chaired by Roger Mudd, History Channel - Journalist (retired) and VFIC trustee, and Phillip Stone, President of Bridgewater College. The mission of the task force was to explore opportunities to involve students at the 15 VFIC colleges in the lively debate and consideration of applied ethics—real world dilemmas that affect peoples lives in increasingly complex ways.

While each VFIC institution had woven ethics into the curriculum and culture of their campuses, the intent was to strengthen the focus already in place. Through companies and foundations such as Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation (signature event sponsor since 2002), GEICO Corporation, BAE Systems, Dominion Resources, and the Emily S. and Coleman A. Hunter Charitable Trust this event has been held since 2000.

The first Ethics Bowl program was held in 2000 on the campus of the University of Richmond which again hosted the Ethics Bowl in 2010. The program took place in 2001, 2003 and 2008 on the campus of Marymount University (Arlington), 2002 and 2007 at Randolph-Macon College (Ashland), 2004 at Roanoke College (Salem) and 2005 at Virginia Wesleyan College (Norfolk), 2006 at Lynchburg College (Lynchburg) and 2009 at Washington and Lee University (Lexington).

Looking ahead, the leadership of the Ethics Bowl wants to ensure the event brings meaningful discourse to different communities around the Commonwealth. The 2011 event to be held at Virginia Wesleyan College ( Norfolk) on February 13-14, 2010.

The Roger Mudd Ethics Bowl Fund was established in 2009 to preserve the continuation of this important program on each of our member college campuses.

Mr. Mudd has served on the Ethics Bowl task force since it's inception in 1998.   He has been an integral part of each year's competition - he has judged debates, participated annually in the writing and editing of the debate cases and spoken on VFIC campuses. His drive and energy have pushed this fledgling project to a statewide competition.
