General Information

Since 1952, the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) has been raising money to strengthen the 15 leading private colleges in the Commonwealth and to ensure that access to private higher education in Virginia is an affordable option for students from all backgrounds and levels of financial need.

One of the VFIC Member Institutions highest priority objectives is securing scholarships for deserving students. Along with our corporate, foundation and individual partners, the VFIC provided over 637 scholarships in 2011-12 to our 15 campuses.

Scholarships provided through the VFIC:

Brighter Futures Named Scholarships (donation of $15,000 and above) - one or more scholarships designated on each of our 15 campus. One student on each of our 15 campus receives at least $1,000.

Affiliate Named Scholarships (donation of $5,000-$14,999) - at least one scholarship designated on each of 5 campuses. One student on each of the 5 campuses receives at least $1,000.

Regional Scholarships directly benefit deserving students from defined regions of the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Scholarships may be designated for students from the following regions:

  • Greater Richmond
  • Hampton Roads
  • Greater Lynchburg
  • Northern Virginia
  • Roanoke/Southwest Virginia

Statewide - the "Virginia Scholars Fund" provides scholarships to students from all regions of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Undergraduate Research Scholarships is an initiative to expand the number of students engaged in undergraduate research in the sciences on the campuses. Each 10-week project requires a total of $5,000 to cover all costs. Scholarships help provide funding for: student summer stipend room and board on campus honorarium for the faculty mentor laboratory expenses and supplies other expenses (books, travel, software).
