VFIC SCHOLARSHIPS

|
The Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges' named scholarship program allows a corporation, foundation or individual to have one or more students at each of the VFIC's 15 member institutions selected as recipients of their scholarship. In addition to making an independent higher education possible for students who otherwise would not be able to attend, the program allows organizations to develop meaningful long-term relationships with students and "see" the positive effects of their philanthropic dollars. To establish a new named scholarship or to ask a question about current scholarships, email Mary-Beth Johnson, VFIC Vice President.
For FY 2011, the VFIC awarded approx. $1.04 million in designated scholarship funds to our member colleges. These funds provided 637 students with opportunities to further their education at our member colleges and universities. Our hope is that, in the future, even greater numbers of students will benefit through partnerships with these and other supporters of Virginia's independent higher education. Scholarship programs are administered by the financial aid offices at the VFIC colleges and universities. See Financial Aid Offices for more information. |

ALTRIA SCHOLARS
Quotes from student "thank you" letter to Altria:

VFIC/Altria Leadership
Scholarship Recipient
Hampden-Sydney College
Class of 2012
Major: Economics and Commerce
Minors: Military Leadership-National Security
"... my on-campus experiences as an RA, peer advisor to freshmen, and student court investigator have helped me hone various critical leadership skills. The cause behind this scholarship is extremely meaningful to me. Being a first generation college student, I've been able to further develop my belief in hard word, honesty, and self-discipline. An opportunity such as the Altria scholarship shows that corporate leaders of today recognize, and want to reward, such development."

VFIC/Altria Leadership
Scholarship Recipient
Hollins University
Class of 2013
Major: Economics and International Studies
"The Altria Leadership Scholarship means I am able to stay at Hollins for four years to pursue a double major in economics and international studies with a certificate in leadership studies, instead of settling for a degree in three years for affordability’s sake. It means that I may take full advantage of the opportunities that are given for me. It means I may focus my efforts on the classes, internships, seminars, books, and presentations that will guarantee my position as a successful leader in my community and beyond. I look forward to following up with you on how this scholarship has impacted my success in the coming years."

VFIC/Altria Leadership
Scholarship Recipient
Lynchburg College
Class of 2013
Major: Accounting
"I just want to start off by saying thank you for providing me with this scholarship to help further my education. Coming from a small community and small family that consists of just me and my mother, I never thought that I would get the chance to go off to college instead of staying at home. I have found out that with hard work and determination anything is possible."
